Nipple reconstruction and areola/nipple permanent tattoos are typically the final step in the breast reconstruction process following a mastectomy. They are the "final touch" in the reconstruction process, and often provide a profound sense of relief to those women who've undergone a mastectomy, as if closing a tremendously tough chapter of their lives.
Areola tattoos and possible nipple reconstruction is completed once the expanders are replaced with permanent silicone or saline bags and have had adequate time to heal and "settle" into their permanent position. That is the time when the nipple tattoo can be placed accurately.
